Dear Colleague, I have just made one of the most important appointments of my new directorship at SCI-Arc. Lebbeus Woods has accepted the position of Academic Director of our European campus in Vico Morcote, Switzerland, where he will teach a studio and seminar beginning in spring 1998. I make this appointment with great excitement and optimism about this new creative partnership between our two campuses.

With SCI-Arc's past 25 years as a firm foundation, we will build a new era of innovative education in architecture.

We are now looking for the right students to join Lebbeus for this experiment. Please share this information with any qualified participants you know.

Cordially,
Neil M. Denari
Director

Vico Morcote

Beginning with the Spring 1998 semester, prominent architect Lebbeus Woods will be the Academic Director of SCI-Arc's European campus. He will teach a studio and seminar, and the students will be based in a villa in Vico Morcote above Lake Lugano. Students will be accepted from the U.S. as well as abroad.

Cybernetic Circus (Vienna)

The studio that Lebbeus Woods will lead investigates three areas of cybernetics: cognition (what is thinking? how do we think?) communication (dialogical exchange of ideas) control (mechanisms to regulate communication and cognition).

Participants will study and design the mechanisms of perception in relation to the constant changes that result from advances in technology. By creating mechanical frames for visual awareness, they will conceive of and design interrelated architectural spaces to frame urban performance, thus reshaping urban spaces and cities.

Questions such as how is the ordinary urban activity reframed by architecture? will be asked, links will be developed between these frames, and a dialogue wil be created between practitioner and practice. In this manner, studio participants will develop methods with specific tectonic implications.
